Hanging the wallpaperThe wallpaper should be hung edge to edge and while pasting always have a bucket of clean water to hand with a sponge to remove traces of paste, clean the trimming wheel, the all-purpose knife, the scissors, or simply to wash your hands.![]() 1. It is generally advisable to start hanging your wallpaper at a corner of the room, a door or a window. Starting from a window and going towards the other edge of the room, you will reduce the risk of the shadow of the thick edges between the joins being visible in daylight. Otherwise, using a plumb line or a spirit level, mark a vertical line on the wall as a starting point. 2. Unfold the top of the strip of wallpaper and place it at the top of the wall. Allow it to overlap a few centimetres onto the ceiling. Be careful that your departure point is vertical and that the paper hangs perfectly vertically against it (a door, window or marked out line). ![]() 3. Unfold the second half of the strip of paper and let it fall down the length of the wall. Check that the strip is vertical using the plumb line. 4. Spread out the paper from the centre towards the edges and from top to bottom. Each action removes air bubbles (if there are any bubbles remaining, they will disappear as the paper dries). Use the smoother or the paperhanging brush to do this. 5. Next hang the other strips of wallpaper, ensuring that the joins are properly pasted. 6.After hanging 4 or 5 strips, check that they are vertical. If you’ve made a mistake, don’t be afraid to remove the wallpaper and reposition it correctly. ![]() 7. Once you are happy that the first strips are vertical, trim along the skirting board and the ceiling. Use the wallpaper cutter to do this, guiding it with a wall scraper or the smoother. 8. Next, use a wallpaper trimming wheel to delicately smooth the joins between the strips. If your wallpaper is embossed or has a raised pattern, use the paperhanging brush to tap down on the join so that the paste soaks in well. 9. Repeat these steps to hang the remaining strips. |
